Because anonymity is the default, identifying is something you switch on

deliberately, and you do it per node rather than globally. The NomadNet guide:

By default, Nomad Network connects anonymously to all nodes. To be able to

identify, and access restricted pages, you must allow identifying on a

per-node basis. To allow identifying when connecting to a node, you must go

to the Known Nodes list in the [ Network ] part of the program, and enable

the Identify When Connecting checkbox under Node Info.

Your own identity hash, the value an operator needs in order to put you on an

allow list, is shown in the [ Network ] section under Local Peer Info.

Other clients expose this differently, and not all of them expose it in the

same place or with the same persistence. MeshChatX, for instance, prompts

before sending your identity, with wording along the lines of "Are you sure you

want to identify yourself to this NomadNetwork Node? The page will reload after

your identity has been sent." Its page browser has no automatic-identify

setting, so it is a deliberate action each time a link is made.

If you are ever unsure whether a node is seeing you, the reliable test is to

load a page that reports it back rather than to reason about settings.
